Why don't schools in the United States teach their students other languages at a very early age?
All the schools I knew of in the US didn't offer second language classes until at least middle school. Why? It would be so much better for the children to learn while they are very young. What do you think?
It has nothing to do with money, but mere effort. All kids need is a classroom, bare chairs, a blackboard, a good teacher and the tenacity to learn. Many countries have this scenario as an everyday reality, and they're much more proficient in languages and much smarter than the average American (and this comes from an American citizen). The mere fact that many of us don't know of a language other than our own is pure ignorance, and simply laziness. If parents permit, kids should be taught at an early age a new language along with their native tongue. It opens their eyes to the world and various cultures. Also, money doesn't guarantee a proper education. Our federal education budget could be slashed 75% and it still would be enough. Less computers and electronics, and more with books and eloquence.
