Cast Iron Fireplaces Add Beauty and Functionality
Cast iron fireplaces are making a big comeback today because they are so versatile. They can burn gas or solid fuel and come in so many different styles there is sure to be one to fit every room decor.
This type of fireplace has a very long history in America. In fact, Benjamin Franklin discovered that most other freestanding fireplaces lost much of their heat through the sides. Later, David Rittenhouse made improvements to Franklin's design and the result was what we know today as the Franklin stove. By the late 1700s, freestanding fireplaces that doubled as a stove, too, were being used throughout America. The wood or coal was burned to cook the evening meal but would also keep the room warm for many hours afterwards. This made them very efficient.
Today's modern freestanding fireplaces are made from the finest cast iron material available. Improvements in manufacturing techniques have kept the traditional look while offering modern methods to heat a room. For instance, there are gas models that connect directly to public utilities. These kinds are simple and easy to use. They burn gas in a highly efficient manner while using blowers to force the hot air into the room.
There are other models specifically designed to burn small pellets. The pellets can be purchased in sacks but regular wood can be burned as well. The pellets are specially designed to burn cleanly, thoroughly, and efficiently. This means fewer cleanups and less mess. Furthermore, since everybody is looking to save money on his or her energy bill these days, the cast iron fireplaces can be a perfect way to supplement a home's heating system. Finally, some models can safely burn all three varieties - gas, wood, and pellets.
For the outdoor lovers there are freestanding cast iron fireplaces for a variety of uses. They usually come with a screen top that can be lifted on or off to add more fuel. These will burn just about anything that will fit inside of the pit but it is best to stick with wood. Many people like them because they are perfect for those crisp autumn evenings when entertaining in the backyard.
Smaller models can be taken on camping trips and then used as a stove during the day and for heating at night. Portable fireplaces keep the fire contained. Therefore, they are much safer to use in the woods when compared to digging a hole in the ground. Who wants to be responsible for a forest fire? With so many styles and so many benefits, it makes sense to own cast iron fireplaces today.
