"Friends" Became Our Friends And HD TV Became Our Society

It's interesting how television can infiltrate the lives of people in households around the world. Hit TV shows and popular movies so quickly become the topic of conversation among friends. From discussing the breakup of Ross and Rachel on Friends to quoting Pedro from Napoleon Dynamite, television has become an integral part of our society.
For 10 seasons, the world followed the lives of six friends living in a rent-controlled apartment in Manhattan. Mornings were spent discussing the romances, new jobs, breakups and corky personalities of fictional characters over coffee in the office and class changes during school. It was unimportant how Courteney Cox and Jennifer Aniston lived their lives, but people were infatuated with the duo when they lived together as Monica Geller and Rachel Green. Woman all over the world asked their hairdressers for Rachel Green's cut and color. Working in a coffee shop or being an aspiring (though often failing) actor became commendable and even desirable. Even men enjoyed watching the comical antics of Chandler – though most of them probably changed the channel to sports when their friends walked in the room.
Those who didn't watch Friends, the TV show, quickly felt left out of conversations among real-life friends. People still continue to reference funny Friends predicaments at Central Perk or Chandler's jokes, even after the show has been canceled for many years. But it's not just Friends that infiltrated our society. Young children, teenagers and even adults are often caught quoting the latest series or box-office hit. It's almost as if you don't fit into cultural norms if you haven't watched movies such as The Hangover and Superbad. A larger percentage of conversational jokes would be lost on a non-movie watcher whether he/she realized it or not. How many times have you watched a movie and thought, "I've heard that joke before. That's what they were talking about?"
We have allowed the characters of these shows and movies to take on real roles in our personal lives. We feel invested in the outcome of their fictional lives and spend our days discussing it with our real friends. And now high definition television makes these fictional characters seem more real and the actors feel more like friends. No longer do you have to look at a flat TV screen and see a flat image. You can see the blemishes on the skin of your favorite actresses who used to seem too beautiful to be true. You can actually see the quarterback's face as he throws the ball while you're watching the NFL Sunday Ticket. Now you can feel like you're actually hiking the Andes Mountains when you watch the Nature Channel.
But you don't need HD to join the morning water-cooler chatter at the office. Whether your coworkers and friends are talking about the latest satellite TV program, last night's big fight, the upcoming football game, that new animated movie or a rerun of Friends – all you need is access to television and movies to follow the conversation.
